Launch of a Campaign to Combat Desertification in Yemen Led by the Arab-European Center for Human Rights and International Law

The Arab-European Center for Human Rights and International Law has announced the launch of an integrated environmental campaign to combat desertification in the Republic of Yemen, as part of its ongoing efforts to support environmental sustainability and strengthen responses to climate challenges in the region.
The campaign is being led by Engineer Haifa Shawkat, the Center’s representative in Yemen. It aims to mitigate the impacts of desertification and enhance community awareness of the importance of protecting natural resources, particularly in light of the environmental and climate challenges facing the country.
The campaign focuses on several key pillars, most notably:
- Raising environmental awareness about the risks of desertification and its impacts on food security and sustainable development;
- Supporting local initiatives for reforestation and improved land management;
- Promoting youth and civil society engagement in environmental protection;
- Building the capacities of local communities in environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation.
In this context, Engineer Haifa Shawkat emphasized that the campaign represents a practical step toward strengthening environmental action in Yemen, noting that “combating desertification is not only an environmental responsibility, but also a humanitarian and developmental necessity to secure the future of coming generations.”
For its part, the Center explained that this initiative reflects its commitment to supporting international efforts to address climate change and to تعزيز the integration between human rights and environmental protection, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and relevant international agreements.
The campaign is expected to include a series of field activities, workshops, and awareness programs, in addition to cooperation with local and international stakeholders to maximize the initiative’s impact and achieve sustainable results.
The Center renews its call to all relevant parties, including governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners, to support this campaign and contribute to its success, in a way that helps protect the environment and achieve sustainable development in Yemen.
